Our History & Mission

Jeffrey Brown & Brown’s Super Stores

Brown’s Super Stores currently operates ten ShopRite supermarkets and two of The Fresh Grocer supermarkets in the Delaware Valley. Jeffrey Brown, founded Brown’s Super Stores in 1988, and Brown’s is headquartered in Westville, NJ.

Jeffrey Brown’s dream was to create a chain of supermarkets that would be accessible to all. While working with his father in West Philadelphia, he saw the needs of less advantaged people regarding the availability of fresh food. He was inspired to specialize in catering to urban communities, particularly those that were former Food Deserts.

Over the years, Mr. Brown has created a supermarket operation that caters to the diverse needs of each community where he does business. However, this operation includes more than just food offerings, such as various partnerships with credit unions and local entrepreneurs. His efforts addressing health inequity through the availability of healthy, affordable, high-quality food for all has led a movement, both in the city of Philadelphia and on a national level.

Over the years, Brown and his stores have been recognized by various publications. The Philadelphia Business Journal pronounced Brown’s as one of “The Best Places to Work” for multiple years in a row. He has also received recognition as a top employer in the region from NJ Biz, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Philadelphia Daily News.

Most notably, Brown had the honor of being chosen as a guest of the First Lady, Michelle Obama, at President Barack Obama’s first State of the Union address, in recognition of his work solving the “food desert” crisis. Brown’s also extensively supports efforts with Workforce Development and hiring of Returning Citizens.

Brown’s Super Stores is well-known for its first-class supermarkets in the greater Philadelphia area, with stores that are spotlessly clean and offer a wide variety of fresh food, low prices and friendly customer service.
